Peter denied his Lord, and the other disciples were scattered and broken. Jesus’ work seemed to have failed.
Later that night, the investigating committee told the Jewish leaders who had not attended Christ’s first hearing what had happened. These priests, scribes, jurists, elders, and leaders hurried to see Christ and sentence Him to death. The Romans prevented them from executing the death penalty, so they decided to deliver the “King” to the hands of the despised Gentiles. They wanted to shame Him before the people. Because He could not save Himself from the Roman power, they reasoned that He was not the expected Christ who would bring the kingdom of God and triumph over all evil.
