17. Jesus Delivered to the Governor
(Matthew 27:1-2)
1When morning came, all the chief priests and elders of the people plotted against Jesus to put Him to death.2And when they had bound Him, they led Him away and delivered Him to Pontius Pilate the governor.

Peter denied his Lord, and the other disciples were scattered and broken. Jesus’ work seemed to have failed.
Later that night, the investigating committee told the Jewish leaders who had not attended Christ’s first hearing what had happened. These priests, scribes, jurists, elders, and leaders hurried to see Christ and sentence Him to death. The Romans prevented them from executing the death penalty, so they decided to deliver the “King” to the hands of the despised Gentiles. They wanted to shame Him before the people. Because He could not save Himself from the Roman power, they reasoned that He was not the expected Christ who would bring the kingdom of God and triumph over all evil.

Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, The enemies cursed You, and the leaders slapped You in the darkness of that night, and brought You to the Supreme Court. You stood silent, prayed for those who hated You, blessed them, and faced all the representatives of Your people. They did not worship You, but sentenced You to death and delivered You to the Roman authority to crucify You. We thank You, O Lord, for Your steadfastness, patience, kindness, and holiness. You prepared Yourself to die as a substitute for us. You bore our offenses, tortured because of our punishment, and loved us to the end. We thank You always for Your perfect love.
